Gathering of Signatures to Initiate a Referendum on halting the Enactment of Changes to Latvia's National Security Laws.

CVK poster about gathering of signaturesThose who have followed recent political events in Latvia will know that President Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga has invoked her constitutional authority to hold up changes to Latvia's national security laws which were recently adopted by the Saeima (Latvia's parliament). The background to the current political situation is much too complex to be summarized here. Those who are interested should read their favorite news sources. The Embassy of Latvia has announced that citizens of Latvia living in or visiting the United States who wish to participate in this signature gathering campaign may do so at the Embassy of Latvia in Washington, DC from April 3rd to May 2nd (inclusive). Information (in Latvian) about hours during which signature gathering will take place, background information and a link to other information may be found at the Embassy's web site www.latvia-usa.org under "PARAKSTU VĀKŠANA". To participate you must appear in person with a valid Latvian citizen's passport at the Latvian Embassy in Washington, DC, and be at least 18 years of age. Referendum on the President's halting the Enactment of Changes to Latvia's National Security Laws.

The Referendum on the President's halting the Enactment of Changes to Latvia's National Security Laws will take place on Saturday July 7, 2007. Latvian citizens will be able to cast their ballots at the Latvian Mission to the United Nations in New York (which is located at 333 East 50th Street (between 1st and 2nd Avenues), New York, NY) from 7:00 am to 22:00 (10:00 pm). There will also be election precincts set up at the Latvian Embassy in Washington, DC and in Indianapolis, IN for Song Festival participants.  To vote in these elections you must have a valid and current Republic of Latvia citizen's passport. An expired passport or other documents will not be acceptable. Please visit the Latvian Embassy web site: www.latvia-usa.org for information about obtaining/renewing your Latvian passport and about how these elections will be conducted in the USA. Click on "TAUTAS NOBALSOŠANA" for more information about the referendum. In order to vote by mail you must register by June 16. Any questions should be directed to the Latvian Embassy in Washington DC at: embassy.usa@mfa.gov.lv or calling (202) 328-2840. Sunday, Jan. 28, at 13:30 - Draudzīgais Aicinājums (The Friendly Invitation - an annual charitable appeal, started in Latvia in 1935, in support of schools and learning) commemoration at Priedaine NJ. Program includes introductory remarks by Rita Gāle, a video on the Latvian poetess Elza Ķezbere, and a concert by flutisy Indra Ozola and pianist Ligita Zariņa of works by Latvian composers. An invitation to help Mārcis Braunfelds and his family. For three generations, and counting, the Braunfelds family has been an important part of the New York Latvian community. As many of you may have heard Mārcis Braunfelds is suffering from a recurrence of a brain tumor. As he was self-employed and the only provider for his family but is now unable to work, those who can afford to, are asked to help his family cover Marcis' medical and other expenses. Thursday, Mar. 29, at 19:00 - Showing of a film GULAG 113, at the Estonian House. See description below. This event kicks off the annual New York Estonian Cultural days, which includes various lectures, panel discussions, -  mostly in Estonian - but also movies, concerts, art exhibits and receptions that even non-Estonian speakers can enjoy. The Cultural Days conclude on Sunday April 1. GULAG 113: Is in English with occasional subtitles. Film follows 89-year old Estonian-Canadian Eduard Kolga, a survivor of the Soviet GULAG system, as he journeys from his home in Canada to revisit key locations from the horrifying ordeal he and millions of other Eastern Europeans experienced more than 60 years ago. Kolga’s story of toil and starvation at the hands of the Red Army is all too familiar within the many communities -- Estonians, Latvians, Lithuanians Poles, Ukrainians and Finns – who similarly suffered in Soviet labour camps during World War II, but is largely unknown in the West. In addition to powerful images captured on location in Estonia and Russia, Gulag 113 offers rarely seen historical battle footage and an interview with Pulitzer Prize winning author, Anne Applebaum.

Stephen Schwartz will be present to introduce each performer who will offer a brief segment of American standards, marking the culmination of their two-week stay in New York during which time they have also been training with ASCAP composer/lyricist, Craig Carnelia and Music Director, Chris Marlowe. Enjoy a Latvian style lunch. We will be selling our own home-baked gingerbread cookies, rye bread, cakes, "Pīrāgi", barley sausage, grey peas, "Gotiņa" candies, and other delicacies. There will also be a table with Latvian books and handicrafts. Advent concert 2007

Sunday, Dec. 9, at 10:00 – Church service and Advent concert at the Yonkers Church. The New York Latvian Concert Choir, the Bronx Chamber Orchestra, and soloists Laila Liepiņa - soprano & Indra Ozola - mezzo-soprano, will perform. Program will feature Christmas cantatas composed by Rihard Dubrs, Juris Karlsons, Uģis Prauliņš, Imants Ramiņš and Vilnis Salaks. After the concert, all are invited to an Advent brunch. You will be able to purchase gifts at the congregation bookstore. Admission is by donation, starting at $20, children ages 13 and under free. Sunday, Dec. 9, at 13:00 – Remembrance for poetess Aina Kraujiete, who passed away recently at the Yonkers Church upstairs hall. Her friends will share their memories of Aija and her books, as well as read from her works. This event will immediately follow the advent concert and brunch (see above).

Daugavas Vanagi EmblemSaturday, Dec. 15, at 15:00 - Christmas tree celebration by the New York Latvian society and the New York Daugavas Vanagi, at the DV House. Admission is by bringing an item for the pot-luck lunch or $10. Program information will follow. Pot luck buffet will follow the program. All are welcome.
